Camera libraries available for Sony Ericsson phones

As promised when we announced our support of independent developers, we have now made the camera library binaries for a number of Sony Ericsson phones available under a special end user license agreement (EULA). You can use these camera libraries to handle the camera hardware in our 2011 Xperia™ phones except Xperia™ PLAY, which has a different camera module.

Download and find out more after the jump.

As we stated a while back, we recognise custom ROMs as an important part of the Android™ ecosystem. When we decided to support the FreeXperia group working on the custom ROMs for Sony Ericsson phones, we quickly found out they had problems with our cameras. This is because the camera technology used by Sony Ericsson is a very advanced – we actually consider it to be the best in the market. However it is a closed implementation, so we can’t share the source code for it.

However, after some discussions with the FreeXperia team, we agreed to allow the FreeXperia team to use our libraries (which can be seen as drivers) for the cameras. But these libraries could not be used as they were, since they had dependencies to other modules in the phone that could not be included in the custom ROM project. To solve this, we rebuilt the libraries and provided them with a special EULA.

These newly rebuilt camera libraries are now modified with less dependencies to other libraries. We have recompiled the libraries without code changes but with different build flags. You can use these camera libraries under a special EULA-license. There are several important conditions you need to comply with, for example:

The Software can be copied and distributed under the condition that the original copyright notice and disclaimer of warranty will stay intact and the Licensee will not charge money or fees for the Software, whether as a stand-alone product, or as part of a compilation or anthology.

Several more conditions apply – please read the full EULA and make sure you are complying before using the camera libraries in any software. Download the camera libraries and find the full EULA text in the zip. Here you can also find a short instruction on how to start using these libraries. For more information on how use libraries like these, please see the FreeXperia project related thread on the XDA forum. We don’t have any possibilities in providing further support on this.

At last but not least, we want to say thanks to all of you in the community supporting this work, we really appreciate it. Even though we might not be able to support every single request we get, we are doing our best to support the community going forward.

The kind of support Sony is giving to developers…I think even my next phone would be Sony.

But the custom ROM development of Andoid 4.1/4.2 of all 2011 devices are stalled due to want of camera libs for JB.
Please release this. I think you will have to do some additional work as JB is not released for 2011 devices. But it will be worth as you would virtually be upgrading your devices to JB by only releasing the camera libs. Also the warranty of most of 2011 devices have already expired. It will be worth even for consumers to upgrade to custom ROMs.

To all SE programmers and developers, PLEASE, PLEASE update the camera software in ICS (both still & video) in all your 2011 models. I consider your camera sensors as very capable, but the software doesn’t seem to take advantage of them. In the ARC S for example, the video compression in 720p is too high (6 Mbps) and some of the detail is lost, and in dark areas, almost all the detail fades away. I think tweaking it to 10 Mbps or higher would a total game changer. The still pictures could use less compression too, why don’t make them equivalent to a 100% quality jpg instead of the 80-90% that they seem to get nowadays? PLEASE Don’t ignore this request. I know you can enhance this. I bet thousands of users will be very happy.

    Dear SE,
I have a Neo MT15i, and just love it, especially the camera looks great!
I made a camera app for MT15i. Most feature works except that I cannot found any reference from Android Developer Website about the touch-focus function. I notice MT15i origin camera app support touch-focus, so is there any reference or any one can help me to make it work?

      Hi Jason,

this sounds odd. If you have not unlocked your phone, please check the consumer support forum available at for more information and support, or take the phone back to your local reseller for investigation.

    Dear Sony Ericsson Developer Team,

I am a fanatic user of Sony Ericsson products, since it’s inception. At present I have been using XPERIA ARC, since June ’11. And on 16th Nov., I had a Update to download. What a surprise !!!! Now I am armed with, according to me, world’s THE BEST phone, forget all those, self hyped, so called wonders – iPhones, Black Berries, Nokias, aah, BULL****.
Can you imagine, a 3D phone camera, a 16X zoom in 8.1 mp( initially there was no zoom in 8.1, in ARC), and LOADS and LOADS of other things. Being an Architect, and a Photo Enthusiast, what more can you ask?

Thanks for your support Nitin! Glad you like the update.

Wow, thanks so much for this! It’s amazing to me to see a manufacturer acknowledging and even supporting custom ROMs. This is a huge part of the reason I just bought an Xperia Pro.

    Hi there..
have just add in the 3 files to system/libs..

    then i rebooted as instructed.

then my screen keep showing ‘sony ericsson’ all over again.

is there anyway to remove the 3 files i add in?

my phone basically can only show sony ericsson..nothing else.
