In developer forums worldwide, there is a huge activity and engagement in the open Android™ ecosystem. And we also know there are a lot of independent developers out there who are creating their own custom ROMs or modifying the kernel. The Sony Ericsson Developer program is following this community with great interest, and even though Sony Ericsson is not supporting all the activities by independent developers, we recognize that custom ROMs are a part of the Android ecosystem.
We therefore decided to assist a group of developers called “FreeXperia”. The overall open developer community is important to Sony Ericsson, and we hope to learn from it, and share knowledge ourselves. The FreeXperia group was supported with devices and technical know-how, and they are now in the process of creating custom ROMs based on the CyanogenMod for several of our latest Xperia™ phones, including Xperia™ PLAY and Xperia™ arc.
Karl-Johan Dahlström, Head of Developer Relations, explains more after the jump.
Important note: By unlocking your phone and running a custom ROM you may void the warranty. See your phone’s warranty statement for details.

Xperia Studio is live. The official website is up and running, and shows off the latest collaborations with artists, intellectuals, and digital fanatics who have experimented with Xperia™ phones to remake reality. Instead of the ordinary research of making calls clearer or screens brighter, Xperia Studio is working with outside-the-box thinkers, who have already gone beyond the boundaries of mobile technology. Check out this video on the Invisible Universe and others on the Xperia Studio website to see the amazing ways that scientists, artists, and musicians have come up with for re-defining how to use Xperia™ smartphones. You can also download project source codes and apps from projects directly from the site. Do you have any wild or crazy ideas for Xperia Studio on how else you can use a smartphone?
Our friends at Ericsson have now initiated the first stage of the Ericsson Application Awards 2012. The competition is an opportunity for developers to win both considerable money (€ 15,000) and fame (access to Ericsson promotion and distribution). In the first stage, Ericsson is calling on you to develop “Apps for Good”, which means applications focused on solving global challenges such as education, poverty alleviation, refugees, disaster relief, agriculture, access to energy, transportation solutions, smart homes and buildings, and weather.
Sounds like a fun and pretty useful challenge, right? In our opinion, it’s a really commendable idea, and we’d love to see more philanthropic initiatives like this.
Sign up for the challenge, and read all about it on the Ericsson Application Awards website.
Are you wondering how you can make your mobile game or app standout better? We can show you how… in Las Vegas. That where we will be hosting a speaking session, as part of this year’s Verizon Developer Community (VDC) Conference happening September 13-14 in Las Vegas, Nevada. Forget the slots and the Strip, the real action (for developers) will be at VDC, Verizon’s yearly conference designed to get your app into as many customers’ hands as possible. We took some time to talk with Magnus Ekenheim, Sony Ericsson’s Head of the Developer Program. Read on to find out what’s in store for our developers at VDC.
