With its new generation of 2011 Xperia™ smartphones, Sony Ericsson will allow advanced developers to unlock the boot loader in a secure and legal way. We will enable this opportunity later this spring, although it will only be possible for certain releases of these phones.

Sony Ericsson Xperia™ X10

Sony Ericsson has previously communicated  that we did not plan for any further upgrades of the Xperia X10 beyond Android 2.1 Éclair. This was correct at the time, but it has now changed and we plan to bring an upgrade to Android™ Gingerbread for generic trade kits of the Xperia X10 at the end Q2 or early Q3 this year. We have simply listened to our consumers, and the development of the software for our new 2011 range of Xperia™ phones gave us a solution that made it possible to deliver Android™ Gingerbread on Xperia™ X10.

Wouldn’t it be cool to have a 3D UI in your Android™ application? I’m Erik Hellman, Lead Software Architect for Android development at Sony Ericsson, and I’ll explain how to make this possible. In this article, I’ll describe how to incorporate 3D with Android’s UI API and OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics, and I provide a bitmap code example that can be used as input to a texture in OpenGL ES 2.0.

The early verdict is in. And it’s good according to Jon Mundy, mobile editor for FoneHome, a UK-based mobile phone blog site. Jon recently interviewed leading game developers to ask what they thought of the Xperia™ PLAY controls. Sony Ericsson and Major League Gaming (MLG), the world’s largest professional video game league and provider of cross-platform online videogame competition, recently announced a partnership that makes the Xperia™ PLAY the official mobile device of Major League Gaming. The new partnership allows MLG to showcase the capabilities of the Xperia™ PLAY through product demos, game challenges and giveaways. Developers will also benefit from the potential of a new audience to connect and test games with, given MLG’s  highly engaged, community of gamers.

Here is the Sony Ericsson “re-PLAY” from GDC11 on March 4.

The last day of GDC started out as strong as ever for Sony Ericsson. Throughout the morning, the Xperia™ PLAY demo stations continued to attract both GDC attendees and fellow exhibitors alike, all wanting to get their thumbs on the sleek device.
