Last week I, Karl-Johan Dahlström, and some of my colleagues at Developer Program went to San Francisco for Google IO. I wanted to give you some reflections from the event that took place at Moscone West centre. First of all the Moscone West center, with a capacity of 5000 people, seems a bit small if you ask me considering the number of people who could not get tickets to the event. Let’s hope for bigger venue next year since the interest in Android will continue to increase. I had some really interesting and intense days and got to see all the amazing things that is happening with Android and products based on Android. Below is my top 5 list of things that was announced and happened at the show:

1)      FroYo announcement and of course the performance boost via JIT compiler. http://developer.android.com/sdk/android-2.2-highlights.html

2)      PayPals Mobile Payment library available for Android, need to check if apps are allowed to use this on Android Market. https://www.thepaypalblog.com/2010/05/paypal’s-mobile-payments-library-now-available-for-android-io2010/

3)      The first Google TV from Sony, this is soooo cool how the TV and Internet get seamless integrated and together with the Cloud to device API it gets even more interesting. http://www.google.com/tv/

4)      Cloud to device APIs, this will definitely create new opportunities, check the demos on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBQFXRW5ZiE

5)      Tried the Perceptive Pixel multitouch screen at the After Party. Loved it. Not sure what I can use it for back home, but I want one ;) http://www.perceptivepixel.com/index.html

Comments and your personal top 5 lists are welcome

Besides me and my colleagues from the Developer Program, Sony Ericsson participated at Google IO with a good mix of people, everything from Product Managers, Software Architects, UI-people, and software developers. We showed off our great Android devices at the OEM Sandbox station, and the interest for X10, X10 mini and X10 mini pro was huge. The people I spoke to love the small size of mini and the experience we created on all of our devices. The fact that X10 mini stands out from the crowed of Android devices was really appreciated.

For the people that have not yet seen the keynotes, below is a link to the sessions.

I’m strongly hoping that Sony Ericsson recognizes the importance of adopting Android 2.2 in its Xperia X10 phones – the performance boosts and additional features are too compelling to ignore.

That JIT compiler (and some of the other 2.2 features) would be really nice in the x10 mini.

The X10 is a great phone there is no denying it, but the lack of Sony’s response and lack of updated software is really taking a toll on there company’s name and image. I myself bought the X10 and was told be the agent that Sony will be updating it soon, Well I am sorry but soon to me is maybe a month or 2 at the most not half a year later. Sony is a great name in electronics but they need to release this update now, If they were to send out 2.1 now and the new 2.2 in a month or so they would resolve almost all the customers complaints, Yes there is always going to be something to complain about but every company has products and complaints. The main reason people want the update is to have there phone up to date and to be able to use the newest apps and to have the extra features used. So again Sony please just release the update, I want to keep my X10 but I want it up to date and not in Q4.

If Sony was to release even the 2.1 update right now they would solve 3/4 of the bad press they are receiving on the forums and blogs, and to offer the X10 users the new 2.2 Froyo in a month or two this phone would be an excellent Android device, Yes there is always going to be another phone but I am a loyal Sony user and I have seen the other phones and none of them compare to the X10′s look, but looks are not everything I want to be able to use a lot of the new apps on the market, I have downloaded a lot of apps and I find out I cannot run them for I do not have 2.1, or my phones missing a feature which is only available with 2.1. Sony needs to just release the update now, I am sure it is there and I do not understand why they have not sent it out yet. You have all these other companys and they are able to have there phones run 2.1 and the new 2.2. Take the older htc magic it is even able to have 2.1 on it. Sony is a well known company and with the amount of techs they have I am sure they can satisfy the X10 users by releasing the update now and also show us that they are willing to listen to us and stand behind there products still. Sony keep me a loyal customer and update the X10 .

    Thanks

karljohandahlstrm, thank you and dongrats for aknowledging the importance of Froyo (and Mulitouch by the way).
So I suppose, the time to act has come for Sony, and then you will update your flagship next month (the Xperia X10 I suppose) with this top thing (Froyo isnt’it) and also you will impleted your #5 top thing (Multitouch you said?), that will be perfect, don’t you think?
Thanks in adavnce, we will be very gratefull.

    @Brad
Unfortunately, I think SE is too ignorant to realize the importance of an up-to-date Android OS on their phones. They won’t listen even if you are shouting it loudly. I know it because I tried to convince them several times.

Besides, they are too slow. Android 2.1 update for X10 in Q4 when Android 2.2 is just coming out. Ridiculous.

Now I have an HTC Desire and I’m so glad that I’ve bought it instead of the X10.

Top 5 with os 1.6 and a promess to update to 2.1 for the end of the year when all your competitor will be already running 2.2 even on some older model.

if android 2.2 the devs has so convinced, why they don’t stop 2.1 and go on with 2.2. the people like your x10 line, but with the performence of 2.2 and flash support they would love it. also it could be the biggest competitor of the iphone, which never will get flash.
The total packet of this special hardware and the right software can’t beat by the competition
