That’s the slogan for Appiness hackathon taking place May 24-25 and June 1 in Sydney, Australia, and from Sony we’re proud to sponsor this hackathon with 50 Xperia™ devices. Appiness is a hackathon for people who want to make something new, and everyone from designers to engineers and entrepreneurs are invited to come together and build brand new apps that truly help people. Because that is what Appiness is all about, to help four different charities, and to do this each member of the participating teams will be equipped with an Appiness toolkit, including an Xperia™ device. Get all the highlights from Droidcon and VHack London [presentations+pictures]

Did you miss Droidcon and the VHack in London last week, or do you feel like re-living some of the action? No worries, we’ve gathered up some of the highlights, as well as images and presentations from Sony. Droidcon London is one of biggest and most influential Android events in Europe, gathering about 1100 attendees this year. And the VHack gathered about 70 top developers from all over Europe who celebrated five years of Android by hacking their way through Friday and Sunday. Check it all out after the jump.

Developing the next gen music app at Way out West [video]

One of the biggest and most influential music festivals in Northern Europe is Way Out West, in Gothenburg, Sweden. This year it took place on August 9-11, and it was preceded by a three day music hackathon in which Sony was part. The mission for the developers taking part in this hackathon was to try to create and build the next great music app. As part of the Sony collaboration with Gracenote, developers were presented with the opportunity to develop apps using the Gracenote API. Through the API, the participating developers could get access to the world’s largest database of music and video material. Check out the video above to get a glimpse of the action!

Get to know the Developer World team at Mobile World Congress

Are you a developer bound for Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week? If that’s the case, then make sure you stop by the Sony (Hall 6 – 6E01) booth and the Google (Hall 8 – 8C25) booth. Don’t miss the speaker session with Sony Ericsson’s Erik Hellman (above), in which you will get to learn how to access and use hidden and protected Android APIs. You will also find out what limitations exists, and you will get some tips’n’tricks on how to use the hidden APIs in a safe way, across multiple vendors devices and Android versions. Ericsson Application Award winners

Yesterday, the winners of the Ericsson Application Awards were crowned. And the winners were the Italian team JustBit in the student category, and the UK based team HipSnip in the company category. Team JustBit’s winning Android™ application use RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology and wireless connectivity to keep track of what groceries you have at home. This way the team tried to address not only an everyday problem that most people can relate to, but also a bigger issue with domestic food waste.

Company category winners team HipSnip presented a well structured and thought through idea and application regarding personal shopping. Check out the Ericsson and the Ericsson Application Awards website to learn more about the winning teams and the competition.

From Sony Ericsson, Karl-Johan Dahlström, Head of Developer Relations, and Joakim Nelson, Head of Industry Collaboration & Asset Management, participated as a presenters and Karl-Johan was also part of the jury. Sony Ericsson is very pleased to have been part of this competition, and we’re looking forward to support next year’s competition also!

Ericsson Application Award winners

Ericsson Application Awards prize ceremony to be livestreamed

The Ericsson Application Awards prize ceremony is taking place on June 22 in Stockholm, Sweden, and we just heard it will all be livestreamed from the Ericsson Studio at Ericsson Headquarters. The event is starting at 10 AM CET and will last for approximately two hours. In the broadcast, you can listen to telecom industry executives speaking about the latest applications and innovations.  This will then be followed by the award ceremony.
