Drone Control, the new drone controlling app from Sony, was released as open source today for Xperia™ devices and SmartEyeglass. The app works with Parrot drones to get real time flight data and battery life info, for example, superimposed on SmartEyeglass for an augmented reality (AR) experience.

The city of Natori in Japan was severely damaged by the tsunami following the big earthquake in 2011. To share some hope to this city struck by hardship, students at the Miyagi Nogyo High School came up with the idea of the Natori AR Hope Tour, which took place last weekend. During this tour, visitors to the ongoing UN World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction got to experience the past and present of Natori city by using SmartEyeglass and a custom made augmented reality (AR) app.
Today we have released a new version of the SmartEyeglass SDK (Developer Preview) that includes a new AR rendering API. That means you can now render text and graphics to stay overlaid onto fixed real-world positions seen through SmartEyeglass. If the user turns to look in another direction, the text and graphics will stay overlaid the fixed position as long as the object is still in view.
Today we’re proud to announce the SmartEyeglass SDK (Developer Preview) in support of the light-weight SmartEyeglass transparent lens eyewear. Sony is committed to be at the forefront of augmented reality (AR) research, which is all about creating live physical views that are enhanced by computer-generated sensory input. This week, Günter Alce and Klas Hermodsson from Sony’s mobile division are participating in the insideAR 2012 conference in Munich, Germany. Günter and Klas are part of the VENTURI project, which is all about constructing augmented realities in new ways, where the available information is presented in a ‘user’ rather than a ‘device’ centric way, which often is the case.
