Xperia™ SP & Xperia™ L – two newest additions that broaden Sony device range [video]

Today, we’re introducing the Xperia™ SP & Xperia™ L, two new models joining the Xperia™ range of premium smartphones. Xperia™ SP comes with a 1.7 GHz Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ S4 Plus dual core processor with the Adreno 320 GPU, 1 GB RAM, 4.6” HD Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA® Engine 2, Android™ 4.1 (Jelly Bean), LTE, NFC, GLONASS, Battery STAMINA mode, and an 8MP camera with HDR for picture.  Xperia™ L offers a 1 GHz Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ S4 Plus dual core processor, 1 GB RAM, 4.3” FWVGA display, Android™ 4.1 (Jelly Bean), NFC, Battery STAMINA mode, and an 8MP camera with HDR for picture and movie. The new Xperia™ SP and Xperia™ L will both be available from Q2 2013. Get more specs after the jump.

Xperia™ SP – dual core, 4.6” HD Reality Display with 8 MP camera, Glove Mode, NFC, and LTE
In Xperia™ SP, you’ll find the MSM8960 Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ S4 Pro platform, with a Krait 1.7 GHz asynchronous dual core processor. The Snapdragon S4 class of processors is the first mobile processor to be manufactured using the latest 28nm process technology that provides advantages in frequency scaling, power consumption, and size reduction.

Xperia™ SP also comes with a 4.6” full HD 1280x720p Reality Display and an 8MP camera with Exmor RS™ and HDR (High dynamic range) imaging for pictures. With the HDR function of the Exmor RS™ image sensor, you can get both good exposure and vivid contrasts for great photos and videos. Learn more about this functionality in our HDR article.  Another added feature is the Mobile BRAVIA® Engine 2, which is an evolution of the Mobile BRAVIA Engine. Mobile BRAVIA® Engine 2 is a high quality image engine that delivers an even better viewing experience than before by adding a new real-time contrast optimisation and improved sharpness enhancement on top of high quality colour management and noise reduction. Get more info on the technology in our Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2 article. Xperia™ SP also incorporates Superior Auto technology used in Sony Cyber-shot™ digital cameras. Superior Auto intelligently detects scenes (up to nine scenes), sets most optimal settings for still image, and applies best image processing including layered technology (up to four photos), making it easy to get the best shot even in a dark or backlight scene.

You’ll also find the glove mode feature in Xperia SP, allowing access to the touch screen even with gloves on. Glove mode is an extension of the Floating touch technology, which lets you highlight the links in the web browser without even touching the screen. Learn more about the technology in our glove mode video and glove mode blog post.

Xperia™ SP also has NFC for One-touch connectivity – one simple pairing step for sharing photos, music, and more, wirelessly across smartphones and other NFC-enabled devices. For more info on how NFC works, read our technical article about NFC. What’s more, Xperia™ SP includes Battery STAMINA Mode, a customisable battery-saving feature that detects when the screen is off and shuts down battery-draining apps you don’t need, then starts them up again when the screen is back on.

Joining our growing list of LTE-enabled smartphones, Xperia™ SP comes with LTE for the fastest download and browsing (in markets where the technology is available). Read more about LTE in our LTE coverage for Xperia article. Finally, Xperia™ SP has a unique ‘transparent element’ element that can be personalised to change colour when notifying you of incoming messages and calls, or set to pulse to the beat of your music.

Xperia™ L – dual core, 4.3” FWVGA display with 8 MP camera, and NFC
Xperia™ L comes with the MSM8230 Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ S4 Pro platform, with a Krait 1 GHz asynchronous dual core processor. It carries a 4.3” FWVGA (Full Wide Video Graphics Array) display along with an 8 MP fast capture camera. Like Xperia™ SP, Xperia™ L also features an Exmor RS™ sensor and HDR imaging for picture and video, allowing you to take sharp, clear photos in lowlight and strongly backlit conditions.

And as with Xperia™ SP, Xperia™ L also has NFC connectivity and Battery STAMINA Mode, allowing one-touch functions with other NFC-enabled devices for easy pairing and sharing of music and photos between devices, and improved battery life, respectively.

Develop Xperia™ games, apps and custom app extensions
A wide range of Sony developer tools, tips, and tutorials are available for Xperia™ SP and Xperia™ L. Since these phones come with Small Apps functionality – special, mini apps that can run on top of other applications – you can use the Sony Add-on SDK to create your own Small Apps. With the Sony Add-on SDK, you can also create extensions that enhance the capabilities of the Music Infinite API in the in-built “WALKMAN” music player app, a signature app in every Xperia™ smartphone. Plus, the Sony Add-on SDK also includes the option to develop apps for Sony SmartWatch and Sony SmartWireless Headset pro. Im a srilankan. Most of srilankans use sony mobiles. Our language is sinhala. Would you add sinhala language & custom fonts support in your next software update? Other leading mobile companies have sinhala & custom fonts support. So why don’t you?

Hi I bought Xperia L but I am unable to open some website which require Adobe flash player, guide me how to resolve this error? Is there any software which resolve this issue?

      Hi,

The reason you can’t see flash content is that Adobe dropped Android support for their Flash Player. However, you can have a look at this tutorial http://forums.adobe.com/thread/1061194 to learn how to install an archived version of the Adobe Flash Player for Android.

      Good luck!

Why does the max resolution for xperia sp camera is only 7mp? And it really have a bad quality images you would notice especially with shots that include text such as sign boards.. will there be a possible fix for this? Please don’t delete this comment

      Hi Paul,
Thanks for sharing your feedback on Xperia SP. Actually, the resolution is 8MP. There are other camera feature improvements in Xperia SP, such as Exmor RS for mobile with a better light sensor, plus Superior Auto Technology, which combines Scene Recognition with high quality imaging technology (HDR and noise reduction) to automatically shoot with the optimal settings.
      Best regards,
      Joe from Developer World.

what i meant to say was the settings in the camera app, I could only set the resolution as high as 7mp(3104×2328, 4:3), not higher both on Superior Auto and Normal Mode, may be just a bug or something but its on my unit

I was looking for some information about compass without magnetoskop and I didn’t find anything real interesting. So it would be very kind if you could describe how it could be possible to have a eCompass in Xperia SP without having a magnetoskop?

Xperia V and Xperia SP. I’m kind of confusing in choosing between this two. Which one is better?
