Small Apps on XperiaZ

Develop smart & handy Small Apps for Xperia™ Z

Many of the regular Developer World readers surely know of the Small Apps functionality for Sony tablets, but did you know that the newly announced Xperia Z also includes Small App functionality? Small Apps are like super-widgets that run on top of other applications and can add smart solutions for daily routines requiring multi-tasking. And if you’re a developer, you can start creating Small Apps for Xperia™ Z today! If you’ve already created Small Apps for Sony tablets, those extensions will also work on all Small Apps-supported smartphones, including Xperia™ Z and Xperia™ ZL. Read more after the jump.

We’ve just introduced a high performance Sony smartphone – the Xperia Z – that comes with a 5” display. And with all that handy screen space, it makes sense to use Small Apps to quickly access common tasks like taking small reminder notes or using the calculator to figure out the tip for a meal.

Small Apps were first launched on the Xperia™ Tablet S, Xperia™ T and Xperia™ V, and they are launched from the menu button at the bottom of the device. The default Small Apps on the smartphones include the Calculator, Notes, Recorder, and Timer, and you can open any of these apps on top of other applications.  And when you launch a Small App, you’ll find nearly the same functionality as the main app. For example, with the Notes Small App, you’ll be able to access the keyboard to type notes, close the Small App, or launch the full Notes app.

A number of Small Apps on Google Play are already available, feel free to download and try them out.

Start developing Small Apps
If you’ve already developed an Android app, why not consider creating a Small App out of it, to create a new innovative use case for Sony users? You’ll gain extra visibility in the market, plus, it’s quite easy to develop your own Small Apps for Sony smartphones or tablets.

To start developing your own Small App, first download the Sony add-on SDK, an add-on to the Android SDK. This package gives you access to the API to create apps that make use of the Small Apps functionality, along with a code example and documentation. Installation instructions can be found on the Sony add-on SDK install page. Then, read more and download the Small Apps code example and documentation from the Small Apps overview section.

    Dear developers’s , I am a true Sony patriot
I just had a suggestion for the Xperia Z , I would love it more if you could add the transparent bar like that in SP at the bottom of Xperia Z , because currently it looks too professional phone & people love that customizeable notification lights , they add beauty & elegance to the phone . Please do think on it .
    I love SONY !

    Hey Joe,

Is there a small App for the walkman app? And is it possible for any developer to develop a smallApp for Sony proprietary apps like walkman?

    • By Joe Padre

      #8

      Hi Abishek,
There is not a Small App for the Walkman app, nor is it possible for a developer to Develop a Small App for the Walkman because there are no APIs for it. However, you can still create your own app, Small App, or extension that can control the same features that the Walkman app has.
      Thanks and best regards,

I need a Sony Mobile Add-on to test Small Apps on it. How can I test this feature? I have a Xperia Tablet S, but I prefer to test on a real device like Xperia T or the new Z.

    Regards,

    Pacosal

I just want to know does it have something like siri . If there’s I’ll buy this phone directly . Actually this phone is really good and I like Sony mobile’s . And I used allot of Sony phones since it was a Sony Ericsson . I used sony Ericsson x10 x10 mini pro , Sony Ericsson xperia arc s and lately the Sony xperia s . Hope this phone will be comparable with the phones in the market like the Samsung galaxy s3 , iPhone 5 and the Nokia lumia 920 . Acutely the Sony phone’s building up materials is better then the Samsung galaxy s3 but it’s better 100 times then the iPhone 5 . Hope it have siri in the iPhone 5 or the the s voice in the Samsung galaxy s3 . At the end this is a big improvement so I’d like to say thanks Sony worker’s and developers not because I’m a Sony smartphones big fan but this phone seems freaking awesome .

          Hi Adithya,
Thanks for your feedback on Xperia Z. There is no personal voice assistant as you describe. All the Sony built-in apps in the this phone are listed on this specs page: http://www.sonymobile.com/global-en/products/phones/xperia-z/specifications/#tabs. Also, you’ll be able to take a screenshot on this phone by holding the power button.
          Hope that helps.
          Best regards,

Only went received my XperiaT few days ago and I am really enjoying using this mobile (confess to always being a Sony fan (list of products owned over years is etc etc etc and [perhaps sadly] pleased to find myself with a Sony Mobile and enjoying. Thus far, finding the info on these pages useful (have used mobiles for over 20 years and this is a bit like my first one which was great fun).
