GLONASS support in our latest Xperia™ phones

Heard of GLONASS? It’s a Russian radio-based satellite navigation system that both complements and provides an alternative to GPS. GLONASS is fully supported in Xperia S, and any Xperia™ device with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S2 or S3 processor and the latest software is capable of supporting GLONASS!  In this article, Magnus Persson from Sony Ericsson explains more about how GLONASS improves positioning and how you can incorporate this feature into your own apps. Read more after the jump.

***May 15, 2013 Note: The list of GLONASS-supported Xperia™ phones is updated.

Hi, I’m Magnus Persson, Positioning Specialist at Sony. I recently wrote an article on how indoor maps can save you money and add extra value to your organisation. Now I’d like to introduce another navigation topic called GLONASS.

Have you ever noticed how your navigation application suddenly slows and starts lagging when driving in downtown cities, just when you need precise instructions the most? This is mostly likely caused by the surrounding buildings blocking the view towards the GPS satellites. In order for a phone to calculate a good position, a clear line of access to four or more satellites is needed. If the signals have bounced off a wall before reaching the receiver, it will reduce the accuracy of the position. This is where GLONASS, another version of satellite based positioning system, can help.

What are GPS and GLONASS?

GPS stands for Global Positioning System and is a satellite based positioning system owned and maintained by the US Air Force. The GPS system currently contains 31 active satellites transmitting signals. GPS is used by millions of civil devices to calculate the position.

GLONASS stands for Globalnaya Navigatsionnaya Sputnikovaya Sistema and is also a satellite based positioning system but is owned and maintained by the Russian Space Forces. GLONASS development started in 1976 but it was not until October 2011 that full global coverage with modern satellites was achieved with 24 active satellites. Hence the number of GLONASS-only devices is very limited.

How GLONASS improves positioning

It’s simple math – by supporting both systems in a receiver, the number of available global satellites increases from 31 to 55. Therefore, more geographic locations are able to receive four or more signals from satellites, which in turn means more successful position calculations and also better accuracy of the calculated positions in challenging environments.

Field tests in downtown San Francisco found that the positioning accuracy of adding GLONASS improved as much as 50%. The test were executed with the help of Qualcomm  using two Sony Ericsson Live with Walkman™ smartphones, and 600 measurements were recorded and analyzed per device.

GLONASS table image

* The number of satellites in average that were used to calculate the position. More satellites usually mean a more reliable and accurate location.

**CEP 68% means that 68% of the 600 measurements are within this distance, in meters, from the reference location. Hence lower values mean better accuracy.

How your app can benefit from GLONASS

Now that you understand the benefits of using GLONASS, the next step is ensuring that your app utilises it. If you’ve already developed an Android™ app using the GPS provider, and if the app is running on any 2011 Xperia™ smartphones, mostly likely it’s already using GLONASS satellites to improve the positioning accuracy and navigation experience. In particular, the Xperia™ arc, Xperia™ arc S, Xperia™ ray, Xperia™ neo, Xperia™ neo v, Xperia™ pro, Xperia™ active, Xperia™ mini and Xperia™ mini pro [list updated May 8]** (along with the latest Xperia™ software) are all capable of supporting GLONASS!

The GLONASS enhancement is transparent and backwards compatible with the existing applications but there are ways to see the benefit of the GLONASS satellites. One way is to download and install the free GPS Test application by Chartcross Ltd. from Android Market. The satellites numbered 65 to 88 are GLONASS satellites that are being tracked.

GPS Test application

Screenshot example of Chartcross Ltd.’s GPS Test application.

If you would like to indicate in any way in your application if GLONASS satellites are used to calculate the position you can do so by checking the GpsSatellite objects returned by the getSatellites method. If the PRN value returned by getPrn is between 65 and 88 and the usedInFix method returns true the last position was calculated using a GLONASS satellite.

To save power, the GLONASS receiver is only activated in problematic locations, such as in an urban environment with high rise buildings. Therefore, if you are in an open sky environment where there are enough GPS satellites available to calculate a good accuracy position, GLONASS will automatically be switched off temporarily to enhance the battery lifetime.

So the next time you’re having problems getting a fix on your location, use an Xperia™ smartphone supporting GLONASS to get faster and more accurate location information.

GLONASS is great! I own a proof story. Imagine ther is a internet startup called Cloud Your Car (http://cloudyourcar.com), providing smart tool for fleet management and optimizing fuel economy for international trucks. Fuel prices are always going high, fuel consumption doesn’t change thus we developed a solution for eco driving and defensive driving. We do support GLONASS because it boosts positioning accuracy. While development we found out that with traditional GPS we could have usually 8-12 satellites on the sky. With GLONASS we see at least 20 satellites that makes obtaining first fix much faster and boosts its general performance.

    Dear Mr Padre,

All concerns toward U. S. A. version Mobile phones: As I presume this model represents the most recent sat nav service (or App) which supported by GPS and Glonass SONY provides on mobile phones, does Xperia Z’s sat nav service (or App) provide included (paid or free) map (or/and traffic) updates and guidance regarding to safety cameras please? Should it support internationally how many countries Xperia Z’s sat anv supports and are all of them receiving free map or/and traffic updates please?

    Yours sincerely

      Hi Johannes,
Regarding your Xperia Z question, here is some feedback from Magnus:

Xperia Z comes preinstalled with Google Maps. It is a free map and navigation service which includes traffic information. It does however not include safety camera info. If that is of interest for you, we recommend you to install and try out Wisepilot for Xperia. As an Xperia owner, you will get an extended trial period of this navigation application which includes both traffic information and safety camera info.

      Hope that helps!
      Best regards,
      Joe from Developer World

    Dear Magnus,

I checked out this cool discussion and decided to pick up a Sony Xperia Phone because of GLONASS support. I do a lot of mapping work and I need GLONASS desperately as it allows me to do my work without carrying a separate GPS. However, out of curiosity I emailed Sony India if the Xperia models mentioned here in this discussion had GLONASS support in India as well. And here is what they wrote to me:

    Dear Amitangshu,

Thank you for contacting the Sony Xperia support centre

We understand the you want to know that Xperia Neo L, Xperia J, Xperia E, XperiaU, Xperia P models launched in India comes with GLONASS support or not

We value the importance of your concern and we are here to assist you

We appreciate your interest in Sony products and services

In response to your query we would like to inform you that GLONASS is not available for all these handsets as mentioned above

We would also like to inform you that we are only providing this feature in our Sony Xperia Z handset

    hello all,

By this improvement /able to use GLONASS satellites/ the Xperia series phones the GPS accuracy and signal stability turn more accurate or more stable than other brand phones? Will be more accurate and stable than phones by other brands? Is there a comparison about them?

As I used gps test software for the XPERIA S testing , I am not able to get the Glonass satellites LOCKED (Gray colour) always ( in real world & simulator style test also). I try to send 8 Glonass satellites only from the simulator in my lab test & it still does not lock ( 4 satellites got) & 4 satellites also lost .Do you know why ?Please advise.

Hi. Thank you for contacting us. We have executed the GNSS tests on XPERIA S once more and it is working as it is supposed. The device is able to calculate the position in GLONASS only and 2 GPS + 2 GLONASS satellite simulations. We did however find problems with one of our simulators when executing the tests. The problem was found to be caused by a leap second setting. Without knowing which simulator you are using it is hard to know what can be causing your problems but maybe it is worth testing different setting configurations or contacting the provider of the simulator.

    Hi,
What about support for Galileo, the European system, and specifically for EGNOS Safety-of-Life?

    • By Magnus Persson

      #20

Hi Ulf! We are monitoring the progress of the Galileo system but we believe there are still some years until complete enough to add any real value. The full Galileo constellation is not planned to be ready until the end of this decade. Even so we hope that we will be able to start using parts of it earlier.
Regarding EGNOS and Safety-of-Life we are not targeting the kind of use cases they are mainly aiming at assisting (aviation etc.). We are however downloading some similar data as transmitted from the EGNOS satellites but does it over the mobile network instead, again to save power.

Sony, this is a good news, but you have to think to something else.
First af all fix the gps issue !!!
It drops every 5 minutes if you have data disabled or you have not a data plan !!!
This would be your priority !!! Gps is actually unusable withoud data.
This behavior affect all Xperia 2011 series, since the last update, and didn’t happen with the old build 3.0.xxxx.
