Sony Ericsson unveils next-generation Xperia™ minis

Today Sony Ericsson introduces the new Xperia™ mini and Xperia™ mini pro, the latest additions to the Xperia™ family. These compact yet powerful smartphones features HD video recording and a full integration of Facebook throughout the phones.  Xperia™ mini and Xperia™ mini pro are powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon™ processor, and run the latest platform of Google’s Android™ – Gingerbread 2.3.  Furthermore, they both integrate best-in-class imaging and display technology from Sony, including Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA Engine.

Building on the success of the original mini series, these innovative smartphones come packed full of features, and with the power of a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon™ processor, its power and speed are uncompromised. With their compact size and perfectly formed design, they sit comfortably in your hand.  Xperia™ mini is 88 x 52 x 16mm and weighs 94 grams. Xperia™ mini pro is 92 x 53 x 18mm and weighs 94 grams.

Xperia™ mini pro brings a new slide-out keyboard with smart functionality. This was first seen on the Xperia™ pro but now we are taking it to a compact smartphone. A subtle but fast Type & Send functionality eliminates the need to open a dedicated app for each type of message, and Smart Keyboard triggers predictive messaging actions automatically when the user slides out the keyboard. Xperia™ mini pro also comes pre-loaded with Office Suite and McAfee antivirus software, letting consumers manage documents and e-mails instantly and securely while on the move.

Both the Xperia™ mini and Xperia™ mini pro feature imaging and display technology from Sony, including Reality Display with Mobile BRAVIA® Engine which includes noise reduction, contrast enhancement, colour management and a sharpness filter. Together it brings sharp, crisp and clear images on the screen, giving users as close to a real life experience as possible. You can also shoot HD video in 720p and take great photos with the 5 megapixel auto focus camera with photo flash and then enjoy them on the 3” scratch-resistant multi-touch mineral glass screen.

Another cool feature with these phones is the improved four corner UI. You will have quick and easy access to your 16 favourite apps from the corners of the homescreen. Just drag the icons from your desktop into the corners of the homescreen to modify what apps to access.

Sony Ericsson also unveils a new integration, Facebook inside Xperia™, which will be included in the new Xperia™ mini and mini pro and soon to be available across the wider Xperia™ range.  Facebook inside Xperia™ integrates social connections throughout the phone, by making Facebook immediately accessible from the most used areas of the phone such as the picture gallery, music player, phonebook and calendar.

Users can now share their “likes” instantly while on the go, synch their calendar, and access information on what friends are watching and listening. With Facebook inside Xperia you get all your friends’ birthdays direct in your calendar. Share status, likes, recommendations and more from the music player and photo gallery. Put the Music and Video Discovery widget on your home screen and see all your Facebook friends’ latest music and video recommendations. You can then view and “like” the video instantly. Sony Ericsson is enabling people to ‘like’, share and comment more easily than ever before with Facebook inside Xperia™.

As Facebook is becoming deeper and more integrated in phones, it becomes even more relevant for all developers to connect their apps to Facebook. To learn more about this, check out this previous blogpost on how to easily connect your apps to Facebook .

It will be possible to unlock the boot loader for both Xperia™ mini and Xperia™ pro, although this is subject to specific conditions. To learn more about these conditions, see our previous blogpost about unlocking the boot loader.

Sony Ericsson Xperia™ mini pro and Xperia™ mini will be available globally in selected markets from Q3.
